Bring your parents and grandparents to Canada with the right medical coverage in place.
The Super Visa was introduced by the Government of Canada in December 2011. It allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit for extended stays on a multiple-entry visa. To qualify, every applicant must have Super Visa insurance — private medical coverage that pays for health care and hospital expenses while they are in Canada, since visitors are not covered by provincial health plans such as OHIP.
Super Visa insurance requirements
- Coverage of at least $100,000 for health care, hospitalization and repatriation.
- The policy must be valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada.
- The policy must be in place, and the premium paid or under an approved instalment plan, before the visa is issued.
Salient features of Super Visa insurance
- Refund for unused days — if your visitors' stay is shorter than planned and no claims were made, the insurer refunds the premium for the unused days.
- Pre-existing conditions — most Super Visa eligible plans include an option to cover stable pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
- Full refund on visa refusal — if the Super Visa application is rejected, submit the insurer's refund form with a copy of the refusal letter for a full premium refund.
